Our verdict
Back to the Future Part III is one of the better film conversions of its time.
Back to the Future Part III is a 1991 action game from Probe Software, based on the third film. It was published by Image Works for home computers and by Arena Entertainment for the Mega Drive and Master System.
Gameplay
Doc Brown is trapped in 1885, and Marty must travel to the Wild West to bring him back before Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen gets him. The game is split into four levels based on the film.
- Horse chase: Doc rides to rescue Clara, dodging obstacles and shooting enemies.
- Shooting gallery: A target range at the town fair.
- Pie throwing: Marty throws pies at Buford’s gang.
- Train: Push the steam train to 88 mph to send the DeLorean back to the future.
The home computer versions were well received, especially on the ZX Spectrum, where it reached second place in the UK charts. The Mega Drive version was received poorly.
Verdict
Back to the Future Part III is a better film conversion than Part II, with varied and fun levels. It’s short, and the quality varies by version, but the Spectrum and Amiga versions are enjoyable. Crash gave it 93%.
