Our verdict
4-D Boxing is a pioneering sports simulation that deserves its place in boxing game history.
4-D Boxing from Distinctive Software leaves behind the arcade style of most boxing games and tries to recreate the sport in detail. It uses a 3D polygon engine with motion-captured fighters and multiple camera angles.
Gameplay
The game aims for realism:
- Realistic moves: Uppercuts, hooks and other punches, with fighters that move realistically.
- Multiple camera angles: Watch the fight from different viewpoints.
- Career mode: Create a boxer and work your way up the rankings towards the title.
- Stick-figure mode: A simplified display for slower computers.
Its 3D engine was demanding for its time, which is why the stick-figure option was included.
Verdict
4-D Boxing is an ambitious, detailed boxing game that was technically impressive in its day. Its graphics are primitive now, but its depth and career mode still make it one of the more interesting boxing games of the era.
The Good
- Realistic, detailed boxing simulation
- Career mode with rankings
- Multiple camera angles
- Impressive technology for its time
