5.8/10
Our verdict
1939 is a niche wargame, but one that covers a part of World War II few games have explored. It's worth a look for strategy and history fans.
1939 is a turn-based strategy game about the September Campaign in Poland, the invasion that started World War II. Similar in style to Panzer General, it lets you fight the major battles of that campaign from either the Polish or German side.
Gameplay
The game has the feel of a strategy board game on a computer:
- Scenarios: Seven historical and five fictional scenarios.
- Period units: Tanks, motorcycles, infantry, cavalry, artillery, reconnaissance aircraft and bombers.
- Two sides: Play as Poland or Germany, against the computer or another player.
- Historical material: Numerous historical pictures help set the scene.
The focus on a single, often overlooked campaign gives the game a distinctive identity.
Verdict
1939 is a solid turn-based wargame with an unusual focus on the invasion of Poland. Its presentation is modest and its scope is narrow, but fans of Panzer General-style strategy will find it interesting.
