Our verdict
20th Century Frog is a quirky curiosity worth a few minutes of your time, if only to try its strange controls.
20th Century Frog is a quirky DOS game in which you control a hungry frog hopping around the screen, eating bugs and avoiding deadly obstacles. Its unusual control system makes it unlike most arcade games of its time.
Gameplay
The game’s twist is in how you move:
- Keyboard controls: Every alphanumeric key is used, and its position relative to the space bar decides the direction and distance of the frog’s jump.
- Points as energy: Each hop uses points, and eating bugs replenishes them. Drop too far below zero and the frog dies.
- Gimmicks: Eating ladybugs gives power-ups that help against specific obstacles.
Learning to judge jumps with the keyboard is the main challenge, and it’s surprisingly satisfying once it clicks.
Verdict
20th Century Frog is an odd but inventive little game. Its unusual controls take some getting used to, and the presentation is simple, but it has a charm of its own.
